Zanzibar
A short-haul beach holiday with a visa on arrival, and the easiest honeymoon we book.
Overview
Zanzibar gives you white sand, warm water and a genuinely different culture within a few hours of home. Stone Town carries centuries of Swahili, Omani and Indian influence, and the east-coast beaches at Paje and Jambiani are among the cleanest in the region.
Most of our couples take seven nights, splitting two in Stone Town and five on the coast. Nigerian passport holders get a visa on arrival, which removes the single biggest planning obstacle for a first international beach trip.
Things to see and do
Stone Town
Carved doors, the old fort and the night food market at Forodhani Gardens. A guided walk is worth the small fee for the history.
Nakupenda sandbank
A half-day boat trip to a sandbar that appears at low tide, usually with grilled seafood on the beach afterwards.
Jozani Forest
The only place to see the red colobus monkey, plus a boardwalk through mangroves. Two hours including the drive.
Spice farm tour
Cloves, nutmeg and vanilla growing in the plantations inland. Lunch is normally included and is better than it sounds.
Good to know
- Visa on arrival costs fifty US dollars in cash. Bring clean, recent notes because worn ones are sometimes refused.
- Tides on the east coast are dramatic. Check the tide table when picking a hotel if swimming matters to you.
- Dress modestly in Stone Town and the villages. Swimwear is for the resort beach only.
- Yellow fever vaccination certificates are checked on arrival for travellers coming from Nigeria.
