Maldives

One island, one resort, and the honeymoon our clients save for. Visa free on arrival for thirty days.

Overview

The Maldives is a chain of coral atolls south-west of Sri Lanka, and the model is simple: each resort has its own island, and you reach it by speedboat or seaplane from Male. That transfer is a real cost and a real time commitment, so we match the resort to the length of the trip rather than to the brochure photograph.

Five nights is the shortest stay that makes sense once transfers are counted. For couples who want more than a beach, the local islands at Maafushi and Dhigurah offer guesthouses, snorkelling with whale sharks and a far lower nightly rate.

Things to see and do

  • House reef snorkelling

Most resorts sit on their own reef. Ask which side of the island drops off before you choose a villa category.

  • Sandbank picnic

A boat drops you on a bare strip of sand with lunch and an umbrella, then collects you a few hours later.

  • Male and the fish market

Worth a half day if your flight timing forces a night in the capital. The old Friday Mosque is built from carved coral stone.

  • Whale shark snorkelling

South Ari Atoll has resident whale sharks year round. Trips run in the morning when the water is calmest.

Good to know

  • Seaplanes fly in daylight only. An evening arrival in Male means a night in the capital before the transfer.
  • Alcohol is not sold on local islands. Resort islands are licensed, which is the practical difference between the two options.
  • Check whether half board or full board is included. Resort restaurant prices are high once you are on the island.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen is required at many resorts and easier to buy before you travel.
